The system consists of a rotating, shuttered video camera, which provides a continuous panoramic surveillance of the impact area. A proprietary software package calculates the miss distance of the projectile from the target. SPIES is particularly suited for Naval anti-surface gunnery scoring where the traditional acoustic and Doppler scoring systems can't be used. SPIES features accurate measurement of "fall-of-the-shot" in near real time. Scoring is accomplished within the UTCS so no additional scoring station is required. The scoring accuracy is 1-3 m depending on range and sea state.
